On Friday, 250,000 Covid-19 vaccines arrived at Auckland Airport in New Zealand from Spain.

The Government announced yesterday the vaccines were expected to arrive. Additional doses delivered from Spain will help keep the vaccination rollout going at speed to vaccinate all New Zealanders against the virus.

Due to a current surge in demand, additional capacity will be maintained for walk-in sites through the month of September.

It is expected that around 1.8m total Pfizer doses will be delivered to New Zealand throughout the month.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says it is heartening to see the rollout going well.

“It’s been heartening to see so many New Zealanders getting vaccinated recently, and the additional doses that we have purchased from Spain will help us provide additional capacity through the month,” she said.

“We’re vaccinating well ahead of plan, and these additional vaccines will ensure we can continue to ramp up our vaccination programme.”

“The Spanish shipment is in addition to New Zealand’s regular weekly delivery from Pfizer, which is also expected this weekend. We don’t have any plans to slow down the rollout.”

The delivery is in collaboration between officials from New Zealand, Spain, the European Commission and Pfizer — securing the agreement.

Vaccines that arrived from Spain have been transferred to the National Vaccine Hub in Auckland for quality checks before being released.

Next week, the government will make a further announcement surrounding the purchase of more vaccines from a second country.
