There are 5 new cases of COVID-19 to report today in managed isolation. There are no new cases reported in the community.

The first case arrived on December 10, from the United States, they tested positive due to onset symptoms at around day 9. This person was transferred to a quarantine facility in Christchurch.

The second case arrived on December 10 from the United States, and they tested positive due to onset symptoms at around day 9. This person was transferred to a quarantine facility in Christchurch.

The third case arrived on December 16 from South Korea; they tested positive at routine day 3 testing. This person was transferred to Auckland’s quarantine facility.

The fourth case arrived on December 16. The Ministry of Health says the country of origin is currently not yet available. They tested positive at routine day 3 testing, and have been transferred to Auckland’s quarantine facility.

One additional case arrived on December 18 from Russia via Singapore, they tested positive upon arrival. The Ministry of Health is regarding this case as the previous infection, that is called a historical case. They were tested on arrival before moving onto a fishing vessel in Lyttleton during the same day. The vessel departed New Zealand shortly after the crew arrived, meaning the vessel is in international waters.

Accordingly, the person had a previous infection that was reported in Russia. Their latest test result reflected that infection.

The vessel will not be returning to New Zealand any time soon, for months at-the-least. 

“The Ministry is still determining whether this case should be reported against our country’s tally (as it has been today) or whether it should be reported as a case in Russia,” said the Ministry of Health in a statement to thisquality.

1 previously reported cases of COVID-19 have now recovered. The total number of active COVID-19 cases is now at 59. 

The total confirmed COVID-19 cases are now at 1,765. This is the number that the Ministry of Health reports to the World Health Organisation.

The total number of tests that have been completed to date is 1,374,050.

There are now 2,414,100 users registered on NZ COVID Tracer app. The app has recorded a total of 142,042,068 poster scans. There have also been 5,722,190 manual diary entries recorded so far.
