Police say a recovery operation is underway in Taranaki after it is believed that two climbers fell to their deaths following an incident overnight.
Reports indicate just before 10pm that a climber fell near the summit of Mount Taranaki.
thisquality understands that Police found the bodies of two climbers at around midnight.
“Due to the weather and light conditions, the bodies could not be recovered at the time. Police and Alpine Cliff Rescue staff are currently on the mountain attempting to recover the bodies and conduct a scene examination,” said a Police spokesperson to thisquality.
Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing while identification is underway.
