According to GeoNet, a magnitude 3.1 earthquake shook Christchurch and surrounding areas on Wednesday afternoon at around 3.20 pm.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 4 km and struck about 5 km east of Christchurch.
From the epicentre, the shake was reported to be felt across the whole city.
Over 1,680 people reported feeling the quake as of 3:35 pm.
