There have been 4 additional deaths linked to the COVID-19 infection. One was in Wellington, and the other three were from the Rosewood cluster in Christchurch.
This brings the total deaths to 9, 6 of those involved were Rosewood residents.
Deaths from today include a man in his 90’s from Burwood, a Man in his 80’s also at Burwood, another man in his 90’s at Burwood, and the fourth was a man in his 70s at Wellington Hospital.

The fourth death was associated with overseas travel.
“This is the largest number of deaths we have reported on any day in New Zealand from COVID-19, and it is a sobering reminder of what is at stake here” Dr. Ashley Bloomfield, Director-General of Health said in a press conference earlier
The people who died from the Rosewood cluster all had underlying health conditions and had also tested positive for COVID-19.
“There are Coronavirus cases in 6 aged residential care facilities around the country, and this is out of a total of over 650 facilities nationwide” Dr. Ashley Bloomfield, Director-General of Health, said.
The staff are being vigilant in these facilities and ensuring the cases get picked up quickly, and care can be given due to the vulnerability of the elderly.
“Today, the total number of COVID-19 cases increases by 17. This comprises 8 new confirmed cases and 9 new probable cases.” Dr. Ashley Bloomfield, Director-General of Health, said.
There are now 628 cases of COVID-19 that have recovered, an increase of 82.
