On Monday 23rd March 2020, Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said that the current Coronavirus cases have risen to 102 from 66 as of 8:00 am.

Over half of the new cases were directly related to overseas travel, he said.

“these are people who have returned to New Zealand recently and have become symptomatic, been tested and confirmed as cases of COVID-19.”

“Most of the remaining cases are close contacts of a previously confirmed case or are associated with an event where there were confirmed cases already.”

Of the two cases suspected of being community transmission, one – in Auckland – is new, and the other is a case in Wairarapa reported on Sunday.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern would address NZ’s coronavirus threat alert level – currently at Level 2 – on Monday afternoon, Bloomfield said.

“We have expected and indeed want to find any cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand. We have expected them because people have returned from a range of places around the world that have higher rates of COVID-19. The important thing is that we find these cases and isolate them; we identify close contacts and isolate them too,” said Ashley Bloomfield.
