BREAKING: The Ministry of Health reports a person who returned a positive Covid-19 test result earlier today, has deemed some staff and patients close contacts at Middlemore Hospital, Auckland.
The patient presented to the Hospital's emergency department on Friday for a non-related issue. All screening questions asked about the virus were answered with no.
It is understood they were asymptomatic at the time.
By Sunday, the patient started displaying symptoms of the virus. They were immediately moved to an isolation ward today after returning the positive test result.
Forty patients were identified as contacts from this exposure event. Fifteen are inpatients, and the remaining twenty-five are being followed up by the Auckland Regional Public Health Service.
Thirty-four staff were identified as contacts. Twenty-one have been stood down with a testing plan in place.
