There are twelve new cases of COVID-19 to report today in New Zealand. The new cases are in managed isolation. There are no new cases in the community today.

Ten of these new cases arrived from India on September 26 on flight AI 1354 and tested positive on day 3 since staying in managed isolation. The cases were spread out throughout the plane on the flight to New Zealand, they were in rows 14 and 41.

“We acknowledge that this is a high number of cases. It reflects that most of the rest of the world continues to experience high levels of COVID-19. This also re-emphasises why we have strong border control measures in place, including day 3 and day 12 testing,  to keep New Zealand and New Zealanders safe,” said the Ministry of Health.

The remaining other two cases that were reported today of which one arrived from the USA on September 26, results of testing returned as positive on day 3 of testing while in Managed Isolation.

Since August 11 the contact tracing teams have identified 4,047 close contacts of COVID-19 cases. 4,047 have so far been contacted and are now self-isolating or have already completed self-isolation.

The number dropped since yesterday due to records being identified as duplicates in the system.

The total number of active COVID-19 cases is currently 53, and of those 42 are imported and are in MIQ facilities. 11 are community cases.

The one new case brings a total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 1492. This is the number that the Ministry of Health reports to the World Health Organisation.

Laboratories yesterday processed 5,679 tests, bringing the total number of tests that are completed to date to 966,238.
