A dog has been shot dead by Police outside the Ferry Motel in Christchurch.
Police were called shortly after 2pm to reports someone slashed another person's tyre with a knife. They arrived armed as a precaution.
A male was being arrested at the address when a dog from inside ran out and attacked a Police dog.
Officers attempted to use OC spray and a Taser in an attempt to deter the dog — it had been unsuccessful. The dog was then subsequently shot.
Superintendent Lane Todd says the dog was taken away for treatment at a local vet.
“It was immediately taken to a local vet for treatment, but unfortunately has since died. The Police dog was checked by a vet and its injuries are not life-threatening,” he said.
“Police never take the shooting of an animal lightly, but it is sometimes necessary to ensure the safety of our staff, Police dogs, and members of the public.”
