At around 10:30 pm on Wednesday, a car crashed into a pole on Kirk Street, Otaki.
The person driving the vehicle left the scene before police arrived.
A police officer on the scene said there were empty alcohol bottles in the car and that it does not initially mean that the driver was intoxicated.
It is unknown at this point if the car is stolen or how fast the car was going, as there were no skid marks on the road.
There were no power cuts and no damage to the power pole.
