Emergency services responded to a serious crash in the Amberley area of Canterbury.
The crash was reported to Police at around 2.50pm, involving three vehicles on the Kowhai River bridge on State Highway 1.
One person was initially understood to have sustained serious injuries and was transported by helicopter to Christchurch Hospital.
The Serious Crash Unit attended the scene. Motorists were asked to avoid the area or expect delays at the time.
Investigations are underway into the circumstances of the crash.
The road was reopened just after 8.30pm.
