Emergency services were called to reports that a small boat had capsized near Taieri Mouth in Dunedin.

Local jet skiers and surfers brought five people back to shore, where first aid was initially provided.

The incident happened at around 1 pm this afternoon, which resulted in five people being transported to Dunedin Hospital after the outboard motor on their boat flipped as it was attempting to head out and across the bar.

Two children and an adult were reported to be in serious condition. A Helicopter airlifted them.

A second adult and a third child were taken to the Hospital by ambulance with moderate injuries.
