Heavy rain warnings have been put in place as daunting weather conditions could cause flash flooding and rivers or streams to overflow rapidly in the Gisborne area.
The warning is valid from 11am on Sunday to 11am on Monday. At least 100mm to 160mm of rain could accumulate, especially in the ranges; at Peak rates of 10 to 15mm/h.
Surface flooding, including slips, is expected in the area.

Drivers are advised to stick to the conditions and be aware of hazardous situations that may occur, such as strong winds for Gisborne and the wider Bay of Plenty.
Strong wind warnings are in place for the eastern Bay of Plenty, Opotiki Gisborne north of Ruatoria areas from 1pm on Sunday to 2am on Tuesday.
The strong wind could result in damaging trees, powerlines or unsecured structures.
Heavy swell warnings are also in place as they are likely to occur due to the weather conditions.
