A Helicopter has crashed on the beach near the Kekerengu Rivermouth at Clarence, 30km north of Kaikoura.
Emergency services were alerted about the crash at around 12:40 pm.
Three helicopters were sent to the scene from Wellington, Nelson, and Christchurch. A St John Ambulance from Kaikōura was also sent to the scene including a doctor and intensive care paramedic.
Five people were reported to be on board the helicopter when it crashed — a pilot and four passengers.
Two people have died from the crash.
Three people out of the five were seriously injured. They were airlifted to Christchurch Hospital.
Police said in a statement to media, that reads: “Further details regarding the deceased and injured, including ages and genders, will not be released until all necessary family notifications have been carried out.”
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) were advised of the accident.
