Lake Taupo is well known for its tourism industry and luxury views. In recent times, people fear that their properties may lose value if the lake drops to the previous low levels once again.
The drop is caused by Mercury NZ’s hydroelectric power stations on the Waikato River, taking in the water from the lake for power generation to disperse to the northland district of New Zealand.
The current levels of the lake are at 356.106 masl (meters above sea level) & it’s lowest was 355.91 masl in May 2016.
The lake levels have been significantly low from November 2019 to April/May this year due to the lack of wet weather in recent times.
According to Mercury NZ, in a statement, they’d said the water levels are usually higher during the winter and spring seasons.
Michael Feyen (Ex Horowhenua Mayor) uploaded a video to social media expressing his concerns.
“I’m just going to give you a pan around here, and I’m having this walk because I have never seen the lake anywhere near as low as this,”
Michael was at the lake ten days before filming, “the lake was down close to a meter by the look of it, and now it’s just much more being exposed.
This water is drained out to create the power to the northern regions, and this here, I’m walking on it now… truly, I’ve never seen it as low as this.”
“We are having lots of weather changes and weather patterns in the likes so to be in May and not have had much rain in the vast of regions of Taupo north,” Michael said.
“The lake is miles away from the water, and this is always underwater,”
Mercury NZ claims to monitor the lake, but this year may be different if they do not control it enough due to the limited rainfall.
“So um I hope there is uh some more water that comes into the lake and that’s majorly concerning for the camp on the lakeside being so extended. Brand new powerpoints are going in, more ablution blocks, and I mean those buildings up there are only 20 feet from the lake, three sets of toilet blocks a laundry block. It’s just disturbing,” Michael said.Do you have a story? send newstips to [email protected]
