A large fire has broken out near the Waipori River south of Dunedin.
The fire was reported at around 1:20 pm.
Eight helicopters, eleven fire trucks, a command unit from Dunedin, and 60 firefighters and support crew responded to the incident who are working to extinguish 80-hectare blaze west of Berwick.
No properties were at risk of the fire during the early stages, as it was being pushed by southwest winds, as scrubland and tussock were burning.
Fire and Emergency Otago released a statement at around 9:30 pm, that reads: “We will be commencing firefighting operations first thing in the morning with helicopter activity in the area early. We ask the public to please stay away from the area. Further updates will be issued tomorrow morning.”
Operations were ceased for the evening, however, crews patrolled the fire ground overnight.
