Rapid growing fires have feared that several homes have been destroyed and has ripped through a forest in Mackenzie Basin.
The responding Emergency crews were called to reports of the fire early Sunday morning at around 3:00 am.
16 Fire and Emergency crews are fighting the blaze.
Lake Ohau Road, off SH8, Waitaki District is currently closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
Police have evacuated residents living nearby, of Lake Ohau Village.
A command unit from Timaru and deployment helicopters are on standby. This includes four tanker trucks and seven appliances.
The fire is accordingly being driven by the strong winds.
Fires were also reported near Domett and Livingstone at around 8:30 am.
