Police say an investigation has been launched after an incident occurred in Manukau on the afternoon of Monday.

They'd attended an address in Ōtara after a man was breaching his electronically monitored bail.

The man was arrested and put into a patrol vehicle for transport to the Manukau Custody unit but had suddenly started showing unusual behaviour. He then became aggressive.

While in the custody unit, he continued to show erratic behaviour — attempting to injure himself after being put inside a cell.

Superintendent Jill Rogers says measures were taken to keep him safe from further harm.

“Custody staff put the man in a restraint chair for his own safety and placed him under constant monitoring,” he said.

“Shortly afterwards, the man’s condition was observed deteriorating, and a doctor was immediately requested to examine him.”

An ambulance was dispatched and the man had been transported to Middlemore Hospital. He remains in a critical condition

The family of the man was notified and are being provided with support. Independent Police Conduct Authority was notified of the incident.

No further information was provided.
