JUST IN: A 24-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a shooting incident at an address on Coast Road in Karitane, north of Dunedin.

Police were called to the address at around 3.20pm today after reports indicated a man was critically injured from a gunshot wound.

The man was taken to Christchurch Hospital for treatment.

The arrested 24-year-old who shot the man faces a charge for attempted murder and will appear in Dunedin District Court on Saturday.

Further details of the circumstances of the incident are still being compiled, but it is believed the two knew each other. No one else is being sought in relation to the incident.

A scene guard is stationed at the property this evening as examinations continue.
