Man in critical condition after crashing into Tree on SH1, Northland

A driver of a vehicle has been reported as critically injured after police received a report of an incident at a bank in Paihia at around 10:45 am.

The vehicle left the bank and continued onto State Highway 1, heading towards small-town Moerewa.

Police monitored the vehicle, but there was no pursuit initiated.

While the vehicle was on State Highway 1, it later collided with a tree at around 11:45 am.

The man has been taken to hospital. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

Part of State Highway 1 is closed from Kawakawa to Pakaraka.

The Serious Crash Unit was notified.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area and expect delays.
