Tim Costley, who attended a ‘meet the candidates’ meeting in Levin on September 13, talked a bit of academics for young women and or under 25s.
The event allowed candidates from all sorts of small to at-large political parties registered and unregistered have their say to an audience.
Costley talked academics and about how his young kids have every right to ‘explore new opportunities’.
“Women were hit quite hard, so they were under 25s. A quarter of our under 25s are now unemployed, they are not in work or educational training, and that’s a real concern for me as a dad of three girls is a real concern. I want my girls to grow up and have a fantastic career,” said Costley.
There are many opportunities and ‘so many things’ as he says that his three girls and anyone that’s under 25 can choose from in the space of getting into an industry.
“One wants to work on helicopters in the airforce like their dad, one wants to be a hairdresser, and one wants to be a volunteer at the SPCA,” said Costley.
At a market, Greyhounds were there, his daughter says that they are ‘so cute’ and that’s why she wants to volunteer at the SPCA. In regards to the one that wants to be a hairdresser, also loves doing DIY because Costley says he’s involved them in everything and tried to expose them to everything as they grow up as an opportunity.
“She’s nine years old, and she can put up an election sign by her self now, she’s fantastic. But look, if she wants to be a hairdresser instead, then go for it!” said Costley.
He agrees that everyone needs to be supporting ‘people’.
Hospitality was hit hard by COVID-19 and Costley suggests that the trades are doing well because it’s more dominated by men and he wants to shift that to be balanced and target the support to those who need it the most, especially those who are currently out of jobs regardless of whether that is women or under 25s.
“The young people have been hurt because they have less experience, they typically have less qualifications than someone that’s 40 or 50. So, it’s really important that we have a targeted approach to this,” said Costley.
