Northland Police are appealing to the public for sightings of 24-year-old Michael Tautari who's an inmate at Northland Region Corrections Facility.
Corrections notified Police after he was granted absence by the Court to attend a funeral in Kawakawa. He failed to return to Facility.
He crashed a vehicle into a fence on State Highway 1 shortly after 7pm in Oakleigh, South of Whangārei. Stole another vehicle and drove off and dumped it in the suburb of Raumanga.
Tautari has links to Auckland and could have travelled.
He's described as 165cm tall, of medium-small build and should not be approached as he is considered dangerous.
A statement from Police said they “are making extensive enquiries” to locate the individual.
“Police want to reassure the community we are doing everything we can to locate him,” the statement added.
If anyone sees him, they are asked to call 111.
