Emergency services were at the scene of a light aircraft crash on rural land between Twizel and Tekapo.
Police were alerted to an aircraft that was overdue at around 4:23 pm.
“Shortly after 5 pm, the plane was reported crashed near the southeast end of the Pukaki spillway, east of Twizel,” said police.
A press release was sent to media at 8:15 pm on Saturday evening notifying that one person has died following the plane crash in rural Canterbury.
They were the aircraft's sole occupant.
“Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing,” police said.
