Police responded to a light plane crash near Ōtaki Gorge Road in Hautere, Kapiti. The incident was reported at around 1.20 pm.
St John Ambulance was called to the crash at around 1.33 pm, road rescue and a rescue helicopter were at the scene.
The plane flown was a Sonex amateur-built fixed-wing aircraft.
The pilot had died in the crash.
“The death will be referred to the Coroner,” said NZ Police in a press release.
An eyewitness said on social media that they had seen what looked to be a crop duster plane that looked ‘off' in the front end.
An investigation is due to happen on Tuesday by the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) to determine how the crash happened and what caused it.
