Police shot a man dead after responding to a serious incident in New Lynn of West Auckland on Friday afternoon.

A man entered a Countdown supermarket in New Lynn at about 2.30pm and injured six people. He used a knife from one of the supermarket shelves to attack innocent victims inside the store

He was located by Police shortly after and shot — dying at the scene within sixty seconds.

Cordons were put in place for Great North Road between Veronica Street and Memorial Drive.

A statement was released from LynnMall Shopping Centre following the incident.

“We’ve been advised that an incident has occurred at Countdown LynnMall this afternoon. The matter is now in the hands of the police and we’ll continue to provide them with our full assistance.”

“LynnMall is now closed and we will update once we know more.”

Covert Police Specialist Tactics Group (STG) staff that were surveilling and following the man as closely as possible without detection, immediately responded to the attack.

Andrew Coster, Commissioner of Police says the man was under surveillance because of his violent extremist views.

“The attacker was under constant surveillance and was today observed leaving his Glen Eden property and travelling to the supermarket, as he had done previously without incident.”

“Our Police staff acted quickly and with great courage to stop this man and prevent any further harm to members of the public. I want to acknowledge this quick response and the bravery of the Police staff who responded. I also want to acknowledge all the people who offered assistance at the scene.”

“Our thoughts are with the victims of today’s attack, their families and those who were caught up in this horrific event.”

No one else is being sought for following the incident that unfolded. With confidence, the Police believe the man had acted alone.
