Police and emergency services were in attendance at a Hillcrest address in Hamilton, Wednesday evening.
It follows a firearms incident where Police staff were seeking a person in relation to an incident involving firearms matters.
Staff confronted an armed man, and shortly after, many shots were fired in a heated exchange between each other.
The man was wounded by a gunshot and died not long after sustaining the injuries.
Waikato District Commander, Superintendent Bruce Bird says no officers were injured and a scene guard was put in place.

“A scene guard will be in place overnight and members of the public are asked to avoid the area,” he said.
“Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing and an update is not expected until tomorrow morning.”
