Emergency services responded to a large fire that spread through Christchurch’s Port Hills above Alderson Reserve overnight.
The fire started shortly after 11 pm on Friday.
Fire and Emergency crews worked tirelessly to keep the fire from spreading further.
Road closures were in place at the intersection of Curries Road and State Highway 76.
Motorists were asked to avoid the area while emergency services were in attendance.
Around 40 houses were evacuated on Port Hills Road, Avoca Valley Road and Gilders Grove.
Police said Port Hills Road remains closed to the public. The residents that were evacuated were able to return to their homes.
Enquiries into the circumstances of the fire are ongoing Police reported.
Previously, four fires were lit in the Port Hills area during the early hours of the morning on Wednesday 9 December — Police do not believe there’s a link to this fire from the most recent one.
The fires were put under investigation by Police after there were reports that a flare was intentionally set off.
