Police responded to an incident at Waikawa Museum midday Wednesday after a substance of concern was located.
The museum was closed to the public as a precautionary measure.
Christchurch based New Zealand Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was notified, and a team was dispatched to the scene.
The team will assess the circumstances of the incident and safely dispose of the substance.
Disposal will happen in a safe environment away from the museum.
Authorities and Fire and Emergency staff are working together with the Defence Force team to dispose of the substance safely.
