Emergency services were at the scene of a serious two-vehicle crash on State Highway 5, Waiotapu, Tuesday evening.
The crash occurred between Waikite Valley Road and Waikaremoana Road at around 7.15pm.
Reports indicated there were three Helicopters that responded to the incident along with a number of emergency units.
Two people died while five others involved had been injured ranging from critical to minor.
State Highway 5 was reportedly put to closure between Wairakei and Tihiotonga, and diversions had been set up to traffic going Northbound and Southbound.
