A nasty thug has been broken the law during the early hours of this morning at around 2:13 am where police were conducting a checkpoint on Te Hononga Street in Otangarei, Whangarei.
A vehicle with two thugs in it pulled into the checkpoint, but the male driver drove off before police could speak to him.
Police followed the thug driving dangerously after it failed to stop at the checkpoint, police initiated a pursuit.
Shortly after, the driver of the vehicle started firing shots into the air, he then stopped. The driver fired multiple shots at the police unit from the vehicle.
None of the shots hit the police unit or the police officer.
Backup was called, and the Armed Offenders Squad were called in a short time later.
Police located the vehicle, and they are continuing to investigate.
“Police acknowledge that this incident will be extremely concerning to our community and we want to assure them that we are working hard to identify and locate those involved,” said Northland District Commander Superintendent Tony Hill.
