Emergency services responded to a single-vehicle crash underneath the Newlands bridge over-ramp on State Highway 1 in Wellington on Sunday.
The incident happened at around 4.50pm this evening.
As a result of the crash, the vehicle reportedly went into flames.
A woman who was the single occupant of the vehicle sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition but later died the following morning.
The southbound lane was still in operation but caused a significant backlog of traffic; later reopening at around 7.10pm.
Motorists were asked to take alternate routes at the time.
Amy Phillips sent the footage to thisquality, says she and her girlfriend Lizzie saw a person in the middle of the road who’d suffered what looked to be burns from the fire.
“That’s my girlfriend Lizzie saying ‘did you see that’ — she’s referring to the person in the middle of the highway half-naked being dowsed with water by another motorist,” she said.
“Both our thoughts were directly around that person suffering from assumed burns, it’s bloody horrible.”
