Waikato Regional Council charged a Huntly landfill forty-four times over a continuous fire on August 13.
The charges were commenced under the Resource Management Act against one company and one individual over activities at the Puke Coal landfill site at Pukemiro, west of Huntly.
An ongoing fire has been occurring since August 2020, which resulted in a significant amount of reports in the hundreds. The reports indicated an impact of smoke and repugnant odour.
The charges come following a formal investigation spanning almost a year in duration.
“We have taken the unusual step of announcing the commencement of this prosecution due to the high public interest,” Council regional compliance manager Patrick Lynch said.
“This matter now before the courts, we will not be able to provide any further detail.”
There's no hearing date set as of yet.
