Waitaki’s Mayor Gary Kircher shows the damage that the Mackenzie Basin forest fires have done.

At around 9:30 am this morning, the Mayor shared photos of a damaged lakeside home on Facebook.

He says that the loss and damages to the property in the now evacuated village are “significant”.

About 50 houses are in the small village have burnt to the ground, leaving the place looking like a wasteland.

The responding Emergency crews were called to reports of the fire early Sunday morning at around 3:00 am.

16 Fire and Emergency crews are fighting the blaze. 

Lake Ohau Road, off SH8, Waitaki District is currently closed, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Police have evacuated residents living nearby, of Lake Ohau Village.

A command unit from Timaru and deployment helicopters are on standby. This includes four tanker trucks and seven appliances.

The fire is accordingly being driven by the strong winds.
