Fourth person dies after Redwood Pass crash on State Highway 1

A fourth person has died following the devastating two-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 near Redwood Pass in Marlborough.

Emergency services were called to the collision about 10.40am on Sunday, February 22. The crash involved a car and a campervan.

Two people died at the scene. Three others were transported to hospital with serious and critical injuries. One of those patients died in hospital shortly after the crash.

Authorities confirmed to media a fourth person has died despite the efforts of medical staff.

One person remains in hospital in a serious condition.

Fire and Emergency crews worked to free people trapped in both vehicles, with rescue trucks and crews from Blenheim, Renwick and RNZAF Base Woodbourne attending the scene.

Hato Hone St John responded with a major deployment including four helicopters, three ambulances, two managers and a major incident support team vehicle.

The Serious Crash Unit examined the scene after the crash, which forced the closure of State Highway 1 near Redwood Pass for several hours. The highway later reopened under temporary speed limits.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash remain ongoing.
