Repeat drink driver busted after loud car draws Police attention in Christchurch

A repeat drink driver is due in court after authorities were alerted to a vehicle by the sound of an extremely loud exhaust in central Christchurch on Wednesday evening.

Officers on foot patrol in Cashel Mall heard a car accelerating loudly, the noise echoing through a nearby indoor carpark and drawing attention from people in the busy retail area.

Members of the public helped officers identify the vehicle. The officers located the car inside the carpark and stopped the driver.

The motorist was issued a $600 infringement for driving causing annoyance after the excessive exhaust noise disturbed people in the area.

Checks also found the driver had excess breath alcohol, and it was not his first drink-driving offence.

The vehicle had a modified exhaust and was issued a green sticker for defects, requiring repairs and inspection.
