Stewart Island white-tailed deer population declines following aerial 1080 operation
Image: A white-tailed deer moves through dense native bush on Stewart Island. The species was introduced to Rakiura in the early 1900s and has since established a free-ranging population across much of the island. Smaller than most mainland deer species, Rakiura’s herd feeds low to the forest floor on shrubs, seedlings and fallen vegetation. (Supplied / Department of Conservation)
