Man charged with murder after woman found dead at Pukehina home

A homicide investigation is under way after a woman was found dead at a Pukehina property on New Year’s Day, with a man now facing a murder charge.

Police were called to an address on Old Coach Road about 3pm on January 1 after concerns were raised for a woman at the property.

The woman was found deceased inside the home.

A 50 year old man was taken into custody and initially charged with assaulting a person in a family relationship. That charge has since been escalated to murder as the investigation progressed. He is due to appear in Tauranga District Court today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Varnam, Tauranga Investigations Manager, said enquiries were continuing as officers worked to piece together what happened.

The death has shocked the small coastal community, with Police maintaining a visible presence in the area while forensic work and interviews continue.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who may have seen or heard anything around the Old Coach Road address on January 1 to come forward.

Information can be provided through Police on 105, either online or over the phone, quoting file number 260101/9901. Reports can also be made anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
