Mike Hosking called Chris Hipkins a prick. Should broadcasters be held to higher standards?

When personal allegations involving Opposition leader Chris Hipkins surfaced through social media posts made by his former wife, the political reaction was immediate and what began as a private relationship dispute quickly moved into the national spotlight, escalating further when Mike Hosking brought the matter into mainstream broadcasting and publicly referred to Hipkins as “a prick”, shifting attention away from policy and leadership and deeper into personal controversy.

The allegations spread across social media creating a cycle where private conflict became public conversation, leaving much of the public debate driven by emotion and speculation rather than established fact.

That environment became more significant when Mike Hosking addressed the matter in his March 18 “Mike’s Minute” breakfast show, using his platform on Newstalk ZB to frame the situation as a wider reflection on leadership and the consequences social media now has for public figures whose personal lives can be exposed and dissected in real time.

Hosking argued that personal lives should remain off-limits unless there was involvement from police, courts, or official authorities, recognising that relationship breakdowns often involve anger and competing versions of events that can easily distort the truth and damage reputations.

That position carried weight because it reflected a principle in journalism that private matters should remain private, particularly when the facts remain contested and deeply personal.

The problem emerged when Hosking moved from defending that principle into personally characterising Hipkins, telling listeners that some could argue he was “a prick”, inserting personal judgment into a conversation he had already framed as one that should sit outside public intervention.

Hosking’s language did not end with the original March commentary. More than a month later, during his April 23 breakfast show, he returned to Hipkins and escalated the attack, describing him as “a pillock, a pratt and a prick” while criticising Hipkins’ in Parliament during an exchange involving Finance Minister Nicola Willis making an ‘unexplained sound’ in the debating chamber, leaving the public questioning exactly what had happened.

The repetition matters because it shows the language was not an isolated throwaway line delivered in the heat of one commentary, but part of an ongoing pattern of personal characterisation broadcast to a national audience.

That decision to say those words widened the issue beyond Hipkins himself and pushed the focus onto the standards expected of mainstream media when dealing with private allegations involving public figures, because once broadcasters engage with personal claims and reinforce them with loaded language, the boundary between public accountability and personal attack becomes increasingly difficult to defend.

Political leaders are expected to face scrutiny and that scrutiny is necessary. But the strength of democratic accountability depends on the focus remaining on public policy decisions and leadership rather than private relationship disputes that have not crossed any formal threshold into criminality or official investigation.

In Hipkins’ case, the matter remained fundamentally private despite its political amplification, making the decision to elevate it through mainstream broadcasting far more significant.

The April remarks widened the issue beyond the original allegations because by that point the focus had shifted entirely away from the private dispute and into direct public ridicule of Hipkins’ character. And once personal insults become part of regular political broadcasting, the standard moves away from analysis and into open hostility making it harder to separate opinion journalism from personal vendetta.

That kind of coverage is not only reputational damage to the individual involved, but the broader erosion of standards that mainstream media relies on to separate itself from the disorder of social media witch hunts and smears, where allegations often spread without context.

Mainstream broadcasters have justified their authority by operating under principles of fairness according to the Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA), but those principles are weakened when private disputes are treated as national political content simply because the person involved holds public office.

The political cost was immediate because personal allegations carry weight regardless of whether they are proven and public perception often forms faster than facts can be clarified. For media, the responsibility is greater because the decision to amplify private disputes gives those disputes legitimacy and broadens their reach far beyond the people directly involved.

The wider issue left behind is whether mainstream media still applies the same standards it publicly defends. Because once privacy is acknowledged as a principle worth protecting, it cannot be selectively set aside when controversy creates audience interest or political opportunity.

The repeated use of language like “prick”, “pillock” and “pratt” also raises a question for broadcasters themselves. That if Parliament has standing orders, rules of conduct, and immediate consequences for language deemed unparliamentary or offensive, there is a legitimate public question over what standard applies when national broadcasters use similar language about elected representatives without any equivalent level of scrutiny or consequence.
