Police dog tracks fleeing teen after Te Atatū dairy theft

A Police dog tracked a fleeing teenager to a suburban address after an alleged shoplifting in Te Atatū Peninsula.

Officers were called to a dairy on Te Atatū Road just after 8pm on Monday after two males entered the store and one allegedly reached over the counter to grab multiple vape products.

Police say the suspect bolted when challenged by staff, pushing past the employee and running from the shop.

CCTV footage was quickly reviewed and a dog handler deployed into the surrounding streets.

The Police dog picked up the scent and followed it through the neighbourhood, eventually leading Police to a property on Imelda Road.

Two teenage males were located at the address. A packaged vape was also found discarded nearby.

Following further enquiries, a 16 year old was arrested and charged with shoplifting. He is due to appear in the Waitākere Youth Court today. The second boy, aged 13, was taken home.

Police praised the swift response from frontline staff, saying the tracking effort helped recover all of the stolen property and bring the alleged offender into custody.
