River search underway for missing boater in Ōpōtiki

A major search operation is underway in Ōpōtiki after a man went missing in the Waioeka River last night.

Police were called about 5.30pm after reports the man had fallen from a boat and was swept downstream. Emergency crews quickly launched a search and soon located the boat nearby.

Rescue helicopters, private aircraft and local jet boat operators were brought in to scour the river and surrounding area, but the man has not yet been located.

Search efforts resumed today near the junction of the Waioeka River and Waiata Stream.

Police deployed land and water crews alongside drone teams for aerial sweeps.
