Christopher Luxon’s “Fixing the Basics” is political spin, not economic reality

OPINION: Prime Minister Christopher Luxon keeps repeating it like a campaign mantra: “National is Fixing the Basics and Building the Future.” The slogan reads well on a pamphlet. In practice, it amounts to little more than porkie pie politics, a comforting line unsupported by hard evidence that ordinary New Zealanders’ lives are actually improving.

That recovery narrative presented at Luxon’s State of the Nation speech hinges on sentiment and projections, not lived experience. Government rhetoric points to inflation easing and business confidence rising. But those are indicators of conditions, not proof that households are better off. Confidence surveys don’t pay power bills or put food on the table and the forecasts don’t erase rent hikes or ease mortgage stress.

Latest official data shows New Zealand’s annual inflation ticking up to around 3 percent, driven by sharp increases in electricity and essential costs like local rates and rent. That’s at the top end of the Reserve Bank’s target band, but not a dramatic win for families.

Wage growth remains muted. Annual wage increases were just over 2 percent in 2025, barely keeping pace with price pressures and leaving most hard working Kiwis effectively poorer. Real wages by some measures fell once inflation is accounted for.

That disconnect between political messaging and household reality is exactly where accusations of porkie pie politics take hold.

Unemployment is another glaring blind spot in the government’s so-called success narrative being framed. Joblessness has risen back above 5 percent as the economy struggles for traction which is hardly a foundation for claiming the basics are fixed.

National’s focus on medium-term projections and long-term fiscal forecasts does absolutely nothing to answer the key question: are Kiwi families experiencing meaningful relief today? The answer, based on the available evidence, is no.

Real disposable income is stagnant all while rent and utility costs continue to outpace wage gains. The propaganda being played over and over is offensive to many hard-working households still feeling the squeeze every week, not just in some abstract economic report.

Worse, the recovery story is built on expected future gains while today’s costs continue to bite. Plenty of economic forecasts now project modest growth ahead, but that does not change yesterday’s or today’s burdens.

Recovery is effectively being treated like a future promise instead of an urgent present reality.

A government committed to Fixing The Basics should show it in the everyday lives of New Zealanders.

Rising wages, stable housing costs, and growing job opportunities should be the priority. Instead, what we see is a carefully crafted narrative that leans on statistics that don’t translate into improved household budgets.

Until there’s solid proof that pay packets stretch further than bills and that families are genuinely better off, Luxon’s “Fixing The Basics” slogan remains political spin, not economic fact.
