Christopher Luxon’s real problem is bigger than likeability

OPINION: Christopher Luxon’s problem is not some voters finding him difficult to warm to. It is that National increasingly risks looking disconnected from the pressure ordinary New Zealanders are living under.

There is nothing wrong with telling people difficult truths. Governments cannot rescue every struggling business, household or industry, and leadership sometimes means saying things people do not want to hear. But there is a difference between leadership and lecturing.

When people are under pressure, they want to know their Government understands the problem before being told to work harder, adapt faster or push through it. That is where Luxon continues to struggle as a leader.

Luxon’s instinct is clearly corporate. It starts with him identifying the problem, defining responsibility and pushing people toward action. That approach may work in a boardroom, but politics is much more complicated because a Prime Minister represents a country full of people experiencing the economy from very different positions.

The same pressure sits heavily on Finance Minister Nicola Willis, who also holds responsibility for economic growth. Luxon can talk about confidence and direction, but Willis ultimately has to make the economic argument stack up for people who judge the Government through their own weekly expenses, job security and ability to get ahead.

Luxon has struggled to convince the public that his style of leadership understands the pressure people are under, while Willis has struggled to turn the Government’s economic programme into a sense of improvement that feels immediate and tangible.

One speaks about where the country needs to go, while the other is responsible for providing the financial path to get there.

Neither has yet provided convincing evidence that New Zealand is moving forward quickly enough.

If people still feel they are working harder simply to stand still, telling them the country is heading in the right direction becomes a much harder political argument to sell.

That creates a growing political opportunity for Labour. It does not need to convince every voter that it suddenly has all the answers. It needs to convince enough people that it understands what life currently feels like for households, workers and small businesses.

Opposition leader Chris Hipkins gives Labour something Luxon has often struggled to project and that is the tone of familiarity.

New Zealanders already know Hipkins, including his weaknesses, but his political style is generally less corporate and more conversational. He does not need to reinvent himself every few months to appear relatable.

This time the challenge is different.

Labour has to convince voters they have learned from their time in government with a clearer idea of what it would do differently.

That is where Labour’s Finance Spokesperson Barbara Edmonds becomes particularly important.

Edmonds provides a noticeably different contrast to the Government. Her economic messaging has focused heavily on what the numbers mean for households, jobs and small businesses, rather than treating the economy as an abstract balance sheet.

There is also something useful for Labour in the combination.

Hipkins can carry the political argument while Edmonds gives the party an economic voice that can challenge National on territory it once considered its strongest.

If National appears focused on discipline, targets and personal responsibility while people are worried about rent, mortgages, groceries and job security, Labour has an obvious opening to present a different approach.

Labour will still need credible economic policies and convincing answers on spending, productivity and growth.

Voters do remember the weaknesses of the previous Government, and simply sounding more compassionate will not erase them.

But elections are rarely decided on spreadsheets alone.

People judge governments partly on whether they believe their leaders understand their lives.

A Prime Minister can make the technically correct argument and still lose public confidence if the message sounds detached from what people are experiencing.

Luxon’s advisers can try to make him warmer, more relaxed and more relatable, but personality cannot be manufactured indefinitely. His challenge is not becoming somebody else. It is learning how to communicate his instincts without making struggling people feel as though their difficulties are being reduced to a lack of effort.

That distinction could matter enormously by election time.

National may believe voters ultimately want an adult willing to deliver hard truths. Many probably do. But voters also expect that adult to listen first.

If Labour can combine that sense of understanding with a credible alternative programme, Luxon’s difficulty with the public mood could become much more than a personality problem.

It could become an electoral one.
