Compassion is the word Christopher Luxon keeps missing

OPINION: Compassion is a simple word. It carries enormous weight in a country that prides itself on fairness, and right now it is the word hovering over Prime Minister Christopher Luxon as homelessness becomes harder to ignore.

In city centres and regional towns alike, rough sleeping is more visible than it has been in years, families are moving between emergency accommodation and cars, and community providers are warning that demand continues to outstrip supply as the cost of rent, food and basic living keeps climbing.

Compassion should shape the response to that reality, not simply fiscal restraint or administrative tightening.

The Government’s focus has centred on restoring order, cutting reliance and tightening spending, and while accountability has its place, it is not what most people think about when they see someone bedding down outside a shop on a crowded footpath in the middle of a bitter cold night.

Compassion means recognising that homelessness is rarely the result of a single poor choice but more often the culmination of rising housing costs, insecure work, untreated mental health challenges and family breakdown, pressures that compound quietly until a person slips through the cracks.

New Zealanders understand that budgets are finite and that government cannot fix every problem instantly. They also expect their leaders to speak and act with empathy and to acknowledge hardship in human terms rather than in abstract targets and balance sheets.

Sustained investment in housing supply, properly resourced support services and coordinated pathways that keep people housed once they are placed, shifts people off the street.

There is a growing sense that the tone from the top has not matched the scale of the issue, that efficiency has been prioritised over empathy. The language of control has drowned out the language of care and that alone comes with political risk.

Elections turn on trust and character as much as economic management, and if voters decide their Prime Minister lacks the instinct to protect those doing it toughest, the judgment will be swift and unforgiving.

Luxon built his case on competence, and without compassion it feels incomplete in a nation that prides itself on generosity and fairness. With homelessness still in plain sight the expectation from the public is unmistakable.

Lead with compassion, or risk being defined by its absence.
