OPINION: David Seymour has found noisy cars a target. News reports state the ACT Party wants noise cameras, a new roadside limit and tougher penalties for vehicles that disturb residents. Anyone kept awake by a roaring exhaust can understand the appeal. The question is why Seymour is putting this fight in the headlines while families struggle to pay for the basics such as petrol.

A camera might catch a driver treating a suburban street like a racetrack. It will do nothing for the parent calculating whether there is enough money left after petrol, rent, groceries and power.

Those costs shape life even after a loud vehicle has passed the front gate.

The coalition government had a chance to make quieter, cleaner transport more accessible. It ended the Clean Car Discount, which reduced the upfront cost of some electric vehicles, and brought light EVs into the road user charges system.

Road users should contribute fairly but removing a purchase incentive without a clear quiet and affordability plan was a choice deliberately made by the government.

Electric cars will not cure antisocial driving and tyres make noise, drivers can still blast music or behave recklessly.

A household under pressure cannot buy an EV because a politician says it is sensible.

Even BYD’s small 2026 Atto 1 starts at $30,990, before on-road costs. That is more than three times a $10,000 used-car budget. Lower running costs may help over time, but they cannot cover the price a family must pay upfront.

The focus should be on affordable used EVs, reliable charging and practical ways to travel without a car.

The gap between a showroom price and a household budget is where conversation must be held.

Targeted support for lower-income buyers, better access to second-hand EVs and charging beyond wealthy suburbs would give more people a choice to a less noisy option. Stronger public transport could also spare another bill.

Stats NZ says household living costs rose 3.2 per cent in the year to June 2026.

Families feel those increases at the petrol pump, checkout and when the power bill arrives.

Politicians asking for votes should explain how they will ease cost pressures and help quieten the roads. A promise to issue more penalties does not answer it.

Residents deserve quiet streets, and persistent offenders should face consequences. Seymour can support that while taking on the larger transport problem, and if he wants to turn down the volume, he should help turn down the cost of getting to work, school and the shops.
