Paul Henry says Māori seats are ‘undemocratic’ but his fix is to give fewer choices

OPINION: Paul Henry has apparently identified a grave threat to New Zealand’s democracy, all because Māori voters have more than one electoral option. In a recent video published to Henry’s Facebook page, he questioned why Māori seats still exist, called them “undemocratic” and argued everyone should simply be placed on the general roll because all New Zealanders should be treated equally.

There is just one awkward cheeky little fact sitting in the middle of the argument like an orange road cone covering a pot hole nobody bothered to move. Māori already choose whether to enrol on the Māori roll or the general roll.

Nobody is being bundled into Māori electorates under cover of darkness. Nobody is being issued a compulsory Māori-roll membership card with their IRD number, and Māori voters make that choice themselves.

Henry’s grand democratic fix is therefore to take two choices, remove one, and call the result equality. Bloody genius.

The argument gets even stranger with the claim that Māori seats are somehow “condescending” because Māori do not need special representation.

There is something wonderfully backwards about declaring Māori perfectly capable of representing themselves while also arguing that one of the choices available to Māori voters should be abolished because apparently they cannot be trusted to decide whether it still serves them.

That is not exactly the towering monument to individual liberty it is being sold as.

Henry appears deeply confused about what democracy actually means here. Māori have a voice too, and choosing to use that voice through Māori representation does not make the system less democratic.

The increasingly familiar political theatre from ACT has turned anything visibly Māori in public life into something that apparently needs to be inspected, challenged or politely sanded down until it becomes less Māori.

Under David Seymour, that approach has become a political brand. The Treaty Principles Bill may have been overwhelmingly defeated, but Seymour has hardly packed the idea into a cardboard box and sent it to storage. In February 2026 he called its defeat a “pyrrhic victory” and ACT continues arguing for clearer statutory definitions of Treaty principles without public mandate.

The formula is becoming painfully predictable.

Te reo Māori becomes “forced”, Treaty obligations become “special treatment”, Māori representation becomes “undemocratic”, and suddenly every acknowledgement that Māori have a distinct constitutional and historical place in New Zealand is treated like somebody has discovered a suspicious package outside Parliament.

Apparently Māori culture is perfectly welcome in public life as long as it stays decorative, performs a nice pōwhiri, looks good on a tourism campaign and does not ask awkward questions about power, representation or Te Tiriti.

The moment it carries political weight, out comes the equality megaphone and another lecture about how recognising difference is somehow the real discrimination.

That is the clever little trick behind much of this rhetoric. Strip away the Māori institution, call the result “equal”, then act baffled when people notice that Māori visibility keeps being the thing asked to disappear.

New Zealand already went through a much larger version of this argument with the Treaty Principles Bill. Parliament rejected that bill at its second reading in April 2025 by 112 votes to 11. That was not exactly a cliffhanger.

The Treaty debate did not disappear, nor should it, but endlessly reheating the same political leftovers and serving them under a new headline does not make them fresh.

Nobody has to believe Māori seats are beyond debate. They are not. Their future can be argued over like any other part of the political system.

What deserves mocking is the idea that removing an electoral choice from Māori voters somehow represents a bold new frontier of freedom and equality. If Māori voters choose the Māori roll, that is democracy in action.

Taking that choice away and calling it fairness is not democratic enlightenment. It is political minimalism with a very expensive marketing campaign.
