Paul Henry’s ACT candidacy exposes the Coalition-right’s ‘celebrity problem’

OPINION: Paul Henry entered electoral politics carrying four decades of broadcasting experience, a large public profile and remarkably few answers about what he would actually do in Parliament.

Henry is standing for ACT, not New Zealand First. The distinction can be noted, although the wider pattern across the coalition government-right is becoming hard to ignore.

ACT has recruited a professional provocateur whose career was built on attention and being performative.

New Zealand First is assembling its own cast of political retreads, former MPs and media personalities.

The two parties increasingly resemble a reunion tour for people who have already spent years in front of microphones, cameras and political power.

On Q+A Jack Tame exposed the weakness in Henry’s candidacy during his first major television interview after the announcement. Tame did not need theatrical outrage and simply asked Henry what he believed and what he proposed doing.

Henry spoke about restoring New Zealand’s “aspirational vibe” and described the country of his childhood as a place where people worked hard and expected to succeed.

The nostalgia quickly collapsed under scrutiny.

Tame pointed out that Henry’s supposedly better New Zealand also had free university education, a major state housing programme and top tax rates above 60 percent.

Henry wanted the benefits of that society without acknowledging the public investment that helped create it.

That contradiction forms the orbit of modern right-wing politics.

ACT celebrates opportunity while attacking many of the institutions that make opportunity possible. It praises independence while pushing policies that leave ordinary families more exposed to landlords, employers and private monopolies. When pressed for detail, Henry offered a typical mood-of-the-room “I’m famous” vibe rather than any policy substance.

Aspirational vibes do not reduce hospital waiting lists, train teachers or protect families from soaring power bills and high supermarket prices.

Henry was equally unconvincing when questioned about broadcasting, the industry where he should have been strongest.

He accepted that foreign technology companies were taking advertising revenue away from New Zealand media. Asked what should be done, he refused to develop an answer and said he would not create policy “on the hoof”.

This was an obvious question for a candidate presenting himself as an experienced media figure.

Henry has spent plenty of time demanding answers from politicians but in this situation he appeared far less comfortable when expected to provide them himself. His defence of ACT’s defeated Treaty Principles Bill was just as revealing. He described the bill as supposedly successful in every respect except the parliamentary vote.

He spun the bill’s failure to the point of absurdity, despite more than 307,000 submissions being lodged and about 90 percent of submitters opposing it.

The danger is treating candidates such as Henry as harmless entertainment. Celebrity politics works by replacing policy with personality and turning scrutiny into another episode of the clown show.

What remained from the Q+A interview was a famous candidate with strong opinions, considerable confidence and no convincing case for why New Zealand needs him in Parliament.
