Shane Jones is turning New Zealand into a quarry with a flag

OPINION: New Zealand’s environment is being pushed into the firing line by a coalition government that talks about growth while treating the natural world as something to be carved up, processed, exported, and explained away later. That should concern every single New Zealander.

The decision to put up to $50 million of Crown funding into two West Coast critical minerals projects is being sold as regional development, economic strength, and practical investment, but beneath that polished language is a much harsher truth; public money is being lined up behind mining expansion at the very moment this country should be protecting its rivers, coastlines, wetlands, forests, and fragile ecosystems with more force than ever.

This is the doctrine in full flight: a Trump-style “dig, baby, dig” crusade led by New Zealand First Resources Minister Shane Jones, the loudest gold-digger on the taxpayer dime, treating environmental caution as weakness and turning every mineral-bearing protected and pristine landscape into a target for extraction.

The West Coast deserves jobs, investment, and serious economic opportunities, but it does not deserve to be used as the testing ground for a government agenda that seems determined to up its ante on mining expansion as somewhat national progress while leaving nature to absorb the risk for decades to come.

Jones wants New Zealanders to see critical minerals as the golden ticket to the future, linking them to batteries, wind turbines, smartphones, global supply chains, and economic resilience, but that argument becomes far less convincing when it is dragged out of the ministerial talking points. He does not appear to care what gets scarred, flooded, stripped, or sacrificed, because every part of his political playbook points in the same direction: dig it up, sell it off, call it progress, and leave the land to carry the wound.

The coalition government is acting as though the word critical gives mining a free pass to destroy our environment, when in reality it should trigger tougher scrutiny from the public, stronger regulatory safeguards, deeper public transparency, and a far clearer test of whether the national interest is being served or simply used as a slogan to help private ventures attract capital leaving the Crown without much benefit.

There is nothing visionary about treating the land like an open wallet to foreign states, and there is nothing brave about putting taxpayer money behind projects that could leave local environments carrying the heaviest burden while Jonsie claims the companies chase the upside.

The public has heard this script before and it is scary especially in regions that have lived with the scars of extraction, where every new project arrives with polished promises, confident assurances, and the familiar claim that this time the damage will be controlled. The benefits will be shared, and the future will somehow be cleaner because the digging has a modern label attached to it.

That’s far from the truth. That is the old machinery of extraction wearing a new coat of paint that peels off tomorrow.

Jones has become the chief salesman for this agenda pushing a brand of politics that measures success by what can be dug up, shipped out, processed, monetised, and defended loudly enough to drown out those who are critically thinking, asking what will be lost in the process. He is not just backing mining projects, he is helping shift the national mood toward a more reckless view of the environment. Where rivers become negotiable, landscapes become economic units, and anyone calling for restraint is treated as an enemy of progress rather than a defender of the future.

That is how countries lose their natural inheritance, not through one dramatic act of destruction, but through a chain of poor funding decisions and public relations campaigns that slowly turn protection into an inconvenience and extraction into common sense. That has been repeated throughout New Zealand First’s political ideology.

New Zealand should be moving into an age of repair, especially as climate pressure intensifies, biodiversity continues to suffer, erosion and flooding hit communities harder, and degraded waterways remind the country that environmental damage is never just a problem.

Instead, under this coalition government, the country is being pushed toward a harsher and more dangerous future, where the answer to economic pressure is to dig harder, where public money is used to make extraction more attractive to private interests, and where Jones appears determined to drive New Zealand toward an environmental furnace with his foot flat on the accelerator.

The most insulting part is the way this agenda has been disguised under the language of strength and resilience. It is a complete lie the establishment is portraying to the masses, because real strength is not shown by how quickly a country can tear into its landscapes, but by whether it has the discipline to protect the places that make it worth living in.

Critical minerals may have a role in a modern economy, but they cannot become a magic password for environmental sacrifice, and they cannot be allowed to turn public funding into a runway for private extraction while nature is pushed into the fine print.

If the Crown is going to put money behind these projects, the safeguards must be fierce and transparent, because anything less would be a sell-out. The West Coast deserves better than another round of promises written in gravel, New Zealand deserves better than a government treating the environment like dead weight, and future generations deserve more than damaged landscapes.

Jones is not leading New Zealand into a smarter future with this mining crusade. He is helping turn the country into a quarry with a flag, and under the coalition government the quarry is winning.
