Protesters rename PM Christopher Luxon’s office amid growing backlash over US minerals deal

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s East Auckland electorate office was turned into the centre of a political protest. Activists accused the government of edging New Zealand towards a controversial minerals deal with the United States.

Campaigners linked to Greenpeace Aotearoa installed US flags across the property, placed images of Donald Trump on the windows, and symbolically rebranded the building as “Trump war minerals HQ” due to a growing alignment between the New Zealand government and US strategic interests.

The protest followed revelations there had been work putting a potential agreement to supply “critical minerals” to the United States for months. That sat uneasily alongside earlier public comments from Luxon suggesting discussions were only at a preliminary stage.

Questions were raised about transparency and intent, particularly as global pressure intensified to secure supply chains for minerals with defence and industrial uses.

Expanded mining activity, both on land and offshore, could cause lasting environmental damage while tying New Zealand into military supply networks overseas. In essence, the protest was about the use of our resources, with several of the minerals in question used in weapons systems and defence technology.

Among them was vanadium, found off the coast of Taranaki, which has been used in applications ranging from jet engines to missile components. Positioning New Zealand as a supplier of such materials has risked blurring the country’s long-held stance as an independent voice in the Pacific.

The wider geopolitical context is that the United States had signalled an increased focus on the Pacific, with its ambassador nominee outlining priorities that would expand defence presence alongside securing access to critical minerals.

That pairing has raised plenty of concerns that New Zealand could be drawn deeper into the orbit of US strategic and military planning.

Greenpeace Aotearoa campaigner Juressa Lee said the proposed deal points to the likelihood of intensified mining activity across both whenua and moana, alongside what she described as the risk of New Zealand being drawn into supporting overseas military operations.

“The Luxon government must not sign [New Zealand] away to fuel the United States’ illegal wars. [We] should have no part in this, and that includes giving Trump access to the resources he needs to keep dropping bombs.”

“Our message to Luxon is clear. [New Zealand] is not a US outpost. We must not allow the US to dictate widespread mining that could cause irreversible harm to the whenua, moana and people here..”

The government’s own moves came under scrutiny as an $80 million commitment to minerals exploration was announced through a regional infrastructure fund, it has been considered as evidence of a broader push to open up extraction projects around the country. That funding decision came soon after a high-profile seabed mining proposal off Taranaki was rejected.

More than 13,000 people signed a petition calling on Luxon to reject any deal that would grant the United States access to New Zealand’s mineral resources. The protest in East Auckland was part of a campaign to push the issue into the national spotlight and force a clearer stance from the government.

The imagery at Luxon’s office drew attention for its bluntness, but behind it sat a deeper concern about sovereignty, environmental protection, and the direction of New Zealand’s role in an increasingly uncertain Pacific due to conflict in the Middle East.
