What Jacinda Ardern’s Daily Show interview revealed about her successful leadership

OPINION: Jacinda Ardern’s appearance on The Daily Show offered a great reflection on her years in office as New Zealand’s prime minister. It revealed the leadership philosophy that made her internationally successful, while also explaining why her political standing eventually became more complicated at home.

The strongest moment came when Ardern spoke about political capital. She rejected the idea that popularity should be treated as something to preserve at all costs.

Ardern understood that elected office had to be used, and sometimes spent, on decisions a leader believed were necessary.

“Whatever political capital that you might have, you’re going to need to spend it,” Ardern said.

“The best we can hope for is that politicians spend it on doing the right thing, even if it’s something that’s hard, even if it’s something that you know might not be popular.”

Many crises happened during Ardern’s tenure. The Christchurch terror attack, the COVID-19 pandemic and extremist attacks against her that followed.

Ardern’s decisions were not universally supported, but she accepted that leadership carried a cost.

There was no pretending difficult choices could be made without consequences.

“It is a courageous act to be optimistic.. but we need more of it, not less.”

That belief explains much of the appeal directed toward a leader full of kindness. Compassion was presented as a source of authority rather than a substitute for it.

The strong response after Christchurch showed that clearly.

Ardern stood with the Muslim community, spoke against hatred and backed rapid action, combining emotional intelligence with political decisiveness.

Many New Zealanders will remember the evenings when nightly Facebook livestream notifications appeared, creating a sense of direct connection with a leader who spoke to the country with calm, clarity and humanity.

Ardern said the easiest political trick was to “weaponise fear and blame”, but questioned whether it left societies any better off. Her message was about how leadership should address grievance, not exploit it.

The interview did not prove Ardern was flawless, nor did she claim to be. She openly said leaders are human, that they make mistakes and sometimes get things wrong. Honesty was part of her strength.

Ardern became a successful leader because she connected responsibility with power and empathy with courage. That gave her leadership a clear moral identity, one that remains distinctive when political aggression, especially under the current coalition Government, is too often mistaken for strength.
