Where are the receipts behind Heal the Nation?

OPINION: Every personality driven campaign reaches a reckoning between rhetoric and reality. Heal the Nation is drifting towards that line.

Previous reporting exclusive to thisquality laid out thin financial disclosures and no clear institutional backbone attached to the promise of a “healing” summer tour. Martel Wikeepa, known as Shubz, the tour’s main promoter, has placed himself squarely at the centre of a troubling reality.

The campaign’s messaging leans on spiritual urgency and restoration while leaving basic questions hanging in mid air. Who will be helped? What services will be delivered? Which qualified professionals are involved? Those questions remain elusive.

What has been made public is a list of travel expenses including vehicle rental, fuel, accommodation, livestreaming gear, Starlink satellite internet, and security. In other words, a grift-adjacent tour for “me” but not for them.

Personal branding fills the space where institutional accountability should sit, all while donations flow to an individual rather than a clearly governed entity. The Givealittle campaign for Heal the Nation raises plenty of questions, as updates about how funds are being used remain sparse and the spotlight stays firmly on the promoter while the supposed beneficiaries blur into abstraction.

A figure emerges promising to fix systems said to be broken, posting TikTok videos for social media likes becomes frequent, and loyalty is cultivated through emotional appeals while dissent or scrutiny is framed as hostility toward the initiative.

The earlier article was careful not to allege illegality. It did not accuse anyone of fraud. What it did describe was the absence of a registered charity, no board, no professional partnerships, no detailed budget, and no promised audit trail for expenses. When that much infrastructure is missing, the questions raised do the heavy lifting.

Heal the Nation by contrast appears engineered for movement and visibility. The big ticket items revolve around keeping the tour rolling and the social media TikToks thrown at everyone’s faces despite little turnout at each event-holding.

At some point the grift becomes unavoidable to ask whether spectacle has overtaken the substance it is the minimum standard for any campaign asking the public for serious money.

If Shubz wants to be seen as promoting a genuine effort rather than a travelling figurehead on a summer tour, the remedy is simple. Publish full budgets and expenses, name partner organisations, disclose governance, and commit to providing receipts.

Messiahs avoid that kind of transparency because it defeats the purpose of a money grab, but serious organisers promoting a fundraiser on this scale would rely on it. It should not be that hard to tell the public where the money is going with paper trail evidence.

Opinion journalism exists to puncture moments when grand narratives get ahead of verifiable facts, and this is one of those moments. The issue is whether what is being promoted will deliver tangible benefits to the public.

New Zealand does not need another roaming saviour figure promising transformation from the front seat of a convoy. It needs transparency that can withstand daylight.

Heal the Nation risks being remembered as a personality driven tour and nothing more than a grift.

The public has every right to demand receipts.
